Understanding Confidence: Overcoming Self-Limiting Beliefs

Confidence is often seen as the key to success, yet many of us struggle to find it within ourselves. My own journey with confidence has been shaped by experiences that are all too common. Like many, I faced bullying as a child, which deeply impacted how I viewed myself. It wasn’t until I discovered my talent for speaking that I began to build confidence, but even then, I faced internal battles with self-limiting thoughts and beliefs.

Confidence is an inside job

Our brains are wired to protect us from harm, both physical and emotional. This means that stepping out of our comfort zone, where we feel safe and secure, can trigger feelings of fear and anxiety. These feelings are natural responses designed to keep us safe, but they can also hold us back from reaching our full potential.

Self-limiting beliefs are like a script that plays in the background of our minds, dictating how we see ourselves and what we believe we are capable of. These beliefs often stem from past experiences, such as failure or rejection, and can become deeply ingrained over time. They create a barrier between us and our true potential, leading to feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt. However the key to success is by becoming an ‘innervert’ – not an extrovert or introvert…..This is about taking time to reflect inward and understand who you really are, what makes you tick, what’s holding you back and working on a plan to consciously and intentionally do the work to change and grow. Confidence is literally an inside job!

Affirmations actually do work!

One of the most powerful tools I’ve found for overcoming self-limiting beliefs is affirmations. Affirmations are positive statements that challenge negative thoughts and replace them with empowering ones. For example, repeating the phrase “I am enough” can help reprogram your subconscious mind to believe in your worth and capabilities. I share this technique and talk it through in the video below. Have a watch!

Another effective strategy is to challenge your comfort zone gradually. Start by setting small, achievable goals that push you slightly out of your comfort zone. Each time you successfully step outside your comfort zone, you’ll build confidence in your ability to handle new challenges.

Finally, it’s important to celebrate your successes, no matter how small. Acknowledging your achievements reinforces positive beliefs about yourself and builds momentum towards greater confidence.

You’ve got this. And if you haven’t, reach out.

Building confidence is a journey that requires patience and perseverance. By understanding the role of self-limiting beliefs and the brain’s natural response to change, you can take steps to overcome these barriers and unleash your true potential. Remember, you are enough, and you have the power to create the confident, empowered life you deserve.
