Unlocking Authenticity: The Power of Post-It Notes in Conscious Creation

If you’re anything like me, your brain is noisy, filled with a million words and ideas, and to be absolutely honest this can be TOTALLY overwhelming. The reality is I love my brain and its hyperactivity. I love that at any given time, my brain-space is filled with a million words, stories, memories, repeated song lyrics and now – as I’m focusing more consciously on my journey of keynote speaking, coaching and educating people around authenticity – my author voice is louder than ever. If you can imagine a circus ring filled with tumbling acrobats, prancing ponies, fire eaters and 50 clowns emerging from the back seat of a mini, then you’ll understand where my brain is at.

While that may or may not be where you’re at too, the reality is that pretty much every person I speak to or coach has a clear idea of where they want to go with their lives, but struggle to see or create the pathway from where they are now, to where they want to be. In a world filled with distractions and noise, finding a simple yet powerful method for conscious creation can be a game-changer and as someone deeply committed to authenticity and conscious living, I’ve discovered a transformative approach that’s not only effective but also accessible to everyone: the humble post-it note. Seriously, this is crazy simple.

The New Vision Board: My Tactical Approach

Move over traditional vision boards as I believe the post-it note method is here to revolutionise the way we set and achieve our goals. Picture this: a large board filled with colourful post-it notes, each representing a unique idea, goal, or aspect of your vision. It’s more than just a visual spectacle; it’s a tactile, engaging, and dynamic process that taps into the very essence of conscious creation.

I used this method to reconfigure my career and even map out my University Master’s project!! Here’s why I love it.

Why It Works: A Deeper Dive

Visualisation and Spatial Awareness

The act of physically placing post-it notes on a board engages our spatial awareness, allowing us to see and comprehend the broader picture. The strategic arrangement conveys hierarchy, importance, and sequence, providing clarity and structure to our thoughts. As we start to move the pos-it notes around, it also allows our brains to move physically from a non-linear or divergent thinking space to a convergent or linear space, creating a sense of order and form – something that is essential for effective goal or life path planning.

Tactile Engagement and Memory Boost

The tactile experience of writing down ideas and manipulating post-it notes stimulates our senses, enhancing the encoding of information into memory. This hands-on approach creates a stronger connection to our goals and aspirations and in my opinion embeds the information more deeply than simply cutting images out of a magazine. The act of writing the words inputs the information into your muscle memory, as well as creating visual imagery in your brain, supporting the rewiring of your subconscious mind, responsible for driving 90 percent of your daily choices, actions and behaviours. The physical act of writing enables us to FEEL the outcomes and the excitement associated with that outcome and as Maya Angelou famously said: People will not remember what you said, but they will remember how you made them feel. You are literally applying this same principal to yourself.

Focus on Key Questions

So how do you start? Do you just do a brain dump? My approach is simple. I have one key topic or outcome, surrounded by strands or streams of thoughts that answer key questions—Who, What, When, Where, How, and Why. This ensures a thorough exploration of the vision and is a simple and systematic process that guides my thoughts, uncovering essential details and potential challenges.

Flexibility and Iteration

For some people, starting with the end goal and reverse engineering the steps back to where you are now is hard. I think I’m pretty smart and have tried this approach for years with clients and to be honest, I find it exhausting. The flexibility of post-it notes allows for easy reorganisation and adjustment is is perfect for someone like me who naturally thinks in mindmaps. We can iterate our ideas, try different arrangements, and adapt as our understanding evolves—a dynamic process mirroring the iterative nature of conscious creation. From there, you can start to create order which leads to a progression of tasks and activities, each leading to the next, helping you visually map out how to take steps closer to your goal.

Subconscious Integration

As I mentioned earlier, 90% of our daily functioning including our choices, actions and behaviours are governed by our subconscious programming. The constant visual presence of our post-it note creation in our environment embeds our focus into the subconscious mind. This consistent exposure reinforces our goals, making it easier to remember and take conscious, intentional action. Through the conscious act of taking action and writing your goals, not only are you starting to create change, you’re creating your own visual support system to continue the rewiring of your subconscious. Studies show it takes around 30-40 days on consistent messaging for new neural pathways to be created in your brain, shaping new choices, actions and behaviour.

If you think back to when you were learning to drive – as an example – you’ll remember that it took several lessons and some months (or years for some of us) for that action to happen automatically and effortlessly. Now you probably don’t think about every single action that you take as you drive from where you are now to where you want to go……..

Engagement of Both Brain Hemispheres

What I also love about this method is that it engages both the creative, visual aspects (right brain) and the logical, structured elements (left brain). The holistic engagement enhances cognitive processing, fostering a balanced and effective approach to conscious creation, while also enabling your brain to do its magic and create a sense of order and understanding. In my experience, this sense of order and understanding relieves the overwhelm and any anxieties associated with trying to clarify your life’s path, purpose or mission. Plus I find it really fun!
